Snow Day- "Unlearning the Myths that Bind us"

I watched the scene from Sleeping Beauty. The other movie I am analyzing is “Cinderella”. When I was in elementary school, whenever I stayed home from school sick I would watch “Cinderella” in my tiny carry around DVD player so I have watched it quite a few times.

  • In Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is the villain. She has green skin and wears all black.
  • In Cinderella, the villains are her stepsisters and stepmother. They are all women. The stepmother wears all dark clothing, has black hair, and is sometimes surrounded by a dark shadow,
  1. Use the Bechdel test on this show and movie.  Do they pass?
  • Sleeping Beauty passes the Bechdel test
  • Cinderella passes the Bechdel test.

  • Both Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella have mostly white characters but the evil characters both have a dark element to their looks.
  1. If you viewed Sleeping Beauty and Paper Bag Princess, what skills did the protagonist use to defeat the dragon?   What messages about consent are present in each story?
  • In Sleeping Beauty, Prince Charming defeated the dragon with his sword. Prince Charming kissed Sleeping Beauty without her consent.
  • In Paper Bag Princess, the girl defeated the dragon by tiring him out.

Comments

  1. Cinderella is very similar to Sleeping Beauty as well as Snow white, both being kissed without consent.

  2. Both Cinderella and Sleeping beauty both await a kiss from their prince charming. There is no consent and is forced because of a evil spell. One from a finger prick on a spinning wheel and the other from a poisoned apple and only true loves kiss can save them.
